Cash Purchase or Rent-to-Own: Which Solar Payment Fits Your Home?

Should you pay for a rooftop solar system in cash, or start with ₱0 down and pay a fixed monthly amount instead? Both are valid ways to switch to solar. The right choice depends on your budget, how much of your monthly electricity bill you want to offset, and how you want to use your cash right now, not on which plan is "better."

Here is how the two options actually differ.

Cash Purchase: You Own It Outright From Day One

With a cash purchase, you pay for the full system upfront. Once it is installed and energized, the system is yours.

The tradeoff is liquidity. Solar is a long-term asset, with a system design life of 25 to 30 years. Paying in full means committing a large amount of capital at once, capital that could otherwise sit in savings or cover other near-term needs.

Rent-to-Own: ₱0 to Start, Fixed Monthly Payments After

Rent-to-Own was built for households that want to switch to solar without a large upfront cost. You pay ₱0 down. Instead of a single lump sum, you pay a fixed monthly amount over an agreed period.

This preserves your cash reserves. You won't need to draw from your savings or emergency fund to install the system. The tradeoff is that, because the cost is spread out, the structure includes financing built into the monthly payments. Once the term is complete, the system is yours.

Your fixed monthly payment is based on your system size and energy needs, and it is built around your budget. This gets finalized after your site assessment, so the estimate you receive fits your home rather than a generic quote.

What Actually Decides It

Neither option is right or wrong. A few honest questions help narrow it down:

  • How much liquidity do you want to keep on hand? If tying up capital in one purchase would strain your savings or emergency fund, Rent-to-Own keeps that cash available.
  • Are you after the lowest total cost, or the lowest starting cost? Cash purchase is one payment and the lower total cost. Rent-to-Own is a fixed monthly amount for up to 60 months, with nothing due upfront. Both put the same system on your roof.
  • How do you think about returns? Both paths work toward the same outcome: a solar system that generates electricity for its full 25 to 30 year design life, with a return on your investment over that horizon. Rent-to-Own simply reaches it through fixed monthly payments instead of one upfront cost.

What both options share: the same panels, the same installation standard, and the same warranty coverage, including a 30-year panel performance warranty and a 1-year workmanship warranty. The payment structure does not change what you receive.

In Short

  • Cash purchase: full payment upfront, the lower total cost, no financing built into the cost.
  • Rent-to-Own: ₱0 down, fixed monthly payments for up to 60 months, the lower starting cost.

Both are ways to switch to solar. The choice comes down to how you want to allocate your cash, not which one costs less over time.

System sizes start at 5 kWp, grid-tied, and are recommended for electricity bills of ₱10,000 and above. Actual price varies depending on system size and usage.
